The 19th Annual Pat Tillman Run Returns to Charleston on April 22nd
The 19th Annual Pat Tillman Run returns to Charleston on April 22nd. Beginning at 9 am, the race will commence at Credit One Stadium and welcomes both runners and walkers to take on the 4.2 mile course around the island. The run has long been established as a way to honor and remember the legacy of American hero, Pat Tillman.
Pat Tillman’s career in football started as a linebacker for Arizona State University. In 1998, Tillman was drafted in the National Football League for the Arizona Cardinals. After the September 11 attacks, Tillman left his football career and enlisted in the United States Army. Tillman served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan until his death caused by friendly fire during an Afghanistan canyon ambush.
The legacy of Pat Tillman lives on through his everlasting principles and service that now continues on in the Pat Tillman Foundation and their scholars. In 2021, the Tillman Scholars expanded their community of leaders to more than 750 individuals. These individuals work towards leading the nation and a brighter future for national security, healthcare advances, innovative technology, education, and more. Numerous Pat Tillman scholars were recognized at the most recent Super Bowl LVII in Arizona during the coin toss.
Veteran Joel Jackson began the Pat Tillman chapter in Charleston in 2018. Jackson started Pat’s Run with just 50 runners on a street in his neighborhood. Since then, Charleston has consistently been one of the top honor run sites – out of 33 total remote cities in the nation. Jackson’s focus for Charleston’s run is so the community can learn who Pat Tillman was.
“Our goal each year is to introduce a new group of individuals to the legacy of Pat Tillman and we do this through a morning filled with walking or running together.” Jackson added, “This run is about more than just getting our steps in or getting a best time. It is about joining together to honor an American hero and introducing Pat’s legacy to younger generations.”
Charleston is one of the 33 locations that will be participating in Pat’s Run in person. Pat’s Run takes place at 9:00 AM at Capital One Stadium. Whether you are a seasoned runner, or just enjoy walking, Pat’s Run is welcome to all ages. Registration includes the event t-shirt. All race registration proceeds go to the Pat Tillman Foundation.
