Do you follow social media personalities who seem to enjoy a great lifestyle of travel? Maybe you’re more of a traditionalist, reading books by famous travel writers. You might wonder how you can have a similar lifestyle yourself. It can seem as though you might just need to be independently wealthy to achieve this, but that really isn’t the case. What Kind of Traveler Are You?

Do you want a home base, or are you someone who wants to travel full-time? Do you want to live in other countries, or would you prefer to be a tourist in an interesting place a few times a year? If you do want to live in other countries, do you want to stay in one place for a year or more at a time, or do you want to be on the move? There are several ways that you can travel as part of your career, whether you want to be a flight attendant or work on a cruise ship, you hope to work for the foreign service, you want to teach English, or you hope to work for a business with international ties. There are also other ways to travel as part of your job, such as running tours. Consider whether you want this to be part of what you do professionally or if you would prefer to take vacations of varying lengths.

Getting an Education

If you do want this to be part of your lifestyle, you might need to go to school to get the right qualifications. This might not be the case if you want to become a flight attendant, but if you want to work in international business or join the foreign service, you’ll probably need a bachelor’s degree at minimum and possibly even a graduate degree. You should start with your bachelor’s and go from there. If you are worried about cost, you can take out both federal and private loans. You can also look to scholarships for college. You can search and apply for these online, and they may cover all the costs of your degree in some cases.

Travel Friendly Career

You might want to pursue a career that allows you to see the world even if doing so is not part of the actual career itself. Teachers get time off in the summer, which they can spend going to various places. There are also portable careers, including freelance work you can do on the road and working for a company that allows you to spend some time doing your job remotely. You might look for a company that offers a generous vacation policy or periodic sabbaticals for employees. Consider exactly where you want to go and what you want to do while you’re there when deciding if this is the right choice for you.

Can you see the world when you have a regular career and just a couple of weeks of vacation time like most people? You absolutely can, but it will require careful planning. First, look at the vacation policy at your workplace. You may find some helpful loopholes, such as the potential of unpaid leave in some cases.
