Rep. JA Moore Files Bipartisan “420 Day” Bill to Pardon 20% of Inmates Convicted of Marijuana Possession Every Year
State Representative JA Moore (D-Charleston) on Thursday filed a bill to make April 20th “420 Day” in South Carolina and require the Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services to pardon 20% of inmates convicted of simple marijuana possession every year going forward.
“It’s backwards to continue to incarcerate people just for simple marijuana possession,” Moore said. “Pardoning these folks is the right thing to do, especially when their ‘crime’ is legal in nearly half of states. This should continue to get bipartisan support.”
State Representative Bill Herbkersman (R-Beaufort) co-sponsored the legislation.
To date, 21 states have legalized marijuana for recreational use and 38 have passed laws to legalize medical marijuana.
Last year, President Joe Biden issued a full pardon for all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession.
