Rip City Quickly Becoming The Hottest Ticket in Town
By: Nameless Numberhead, Henry Riggs & Maari Suorsa
Still riding high from their recent “Rip City on a Boat” show (see below) which took place aboard the Carolina Belle for a sunset cruise comedy show in the Charleston harbor this past month, Rip City has announced 3 new summer shows that you won’t want to miss. As always, each show features a completely different cast of performers doing brand new and original works. Typically the work skews comedic but the show also features musicians, dancers, and artists from all walks. It’s a great place to discover new voices emerging in Charleston.
Last month we debuted 2 brand new sketch comedy teams including Beaver Sword, who is Cliff Sarlo and Jason Male both recent graduates of the College of Charleston; and Sketchy Socks which Dan Morgan, Neil Paulson, Laura Lynn Lester, Annie Norris, David Englehart, Ben Egelson, and Annalise Bowen who met taking improv class and branched off to form an independent improv/sketch comedy group. Rip City continues to be an incubator for experimental work but also featuring working professionals like Cullen Moss (OBX, Righteous Gemstones), and Lindsay Collins (EffinbRadio, LMC Sound Systems) who are both Rip City regulars.
Every show is sillier and more unhinged than the last but always a good time. Partially scripted but mostly improvised, the show is always experimenting with new ideas and different collaborations. The unique nature of seeing comedy work before it’s ready adds an exciting element of tightrope walking that keeps audiences coming back. And it’s been showing through the recent explosion in popularity. Shows have been selling and drawing larger crowds each month.
“This show started in a room that could only hold 20 people, and we couldn’t even fill that at the time,” jokes Henry Riggs, curator and member of Nameless Numberhead the show’s producing entity. “Now we’re selling out breweries, and photo studio’s, and boats! It’s still crazy to us only 6 months back.”
The summer shows are going full steam ahead with all the craziness. Make sure you get tickets ahead of time so you don’t miss performances by Sxvxnt (pronounced Savant) who is a classically trained musician & songwriter, bringing his signature style of hip hop to Lofi on June 24th, or Christian Zamora, a concert violinist formerly of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra joining us on May 27th at Silver Hill Studios. Plus food by Tully’s on July 29th and some other really fun performers and experiences in the works for these upcoming shows to be announced soon.
Upcoming shows:
- Saturday, May 27th @ Silver Hill Studios
- Saturday, June 24th @ LoFi Brewery
- Saturday, July 29th @ Lofi Brewery
