Greenwood Charter Academy Hires Rhonda Powell as Principal

Greenwood, SC – Greenwood Charter Academy is proud to announce the hiring of Rhonda Powell (right) as the founding principal at GCA. The School Director, Jason Morrison, will focus on the overall operations of the school, while Mrs. Powell will focus on supporting the school’s goals of academic excellence. 

Powell brings more than two decades of experience working in various roles within both public and private K-12 schools in Greenwood, South Carolina. As both a native and current resident of Greenwood County, Powell has a longstanding background working with students and parents in the area, in order to support students in meeting their academic potential. Powell has also served as an instructor, candidate evaluator, and program advisory committee member at the College of Education at Lander University.

“I am very proud and excited to join the Greenwood Charter Academy team as the founding principal.” Rhonda Powell stated, “As an experienced educational leader, I have consistently prioritized excellence in academics and citizenship throughout my career. I believe a well-rounded education encompasses not only rigorous academic standards, but also the development of character, empathy, and social responsibility. Building and maintaining relationships is a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. I also believe in the power of strong partnerships with teachers, parents, and community stakeholders. Through transparent communication, I believe we at GCA can successfully cultivate a sense of trust and cooperation among all stakeholders. I am excited to get to work to make history in Greenwood County.”

Her stellar reputation, alongside her experience at almost every traditional public, private, and institution of higher education in the area, Mrs. Powell will hit the ground running and will make an incredibly positive impact on GCA for many years to come.”

Greenwood Charter Academy is the first tuition-free public charter school in the history of Greenwood County. GCA opens its doors for the first time on July 20, for the 2023-24 school year. GCA will open with grades K-6 with plans to add one grade each year, until the school is fully built out with grades K-8. GCA has received more applications than available spaces and anticipates a waiting list in its first year of opertation. GCA is open to all students in the area, even those who live outside of Greenwood County.
