Charleston Battery attacker Fidel Barajas has been called up to the Mexico U-17 national team for a pair of friendlies against Brazil’s youth squads in Mexico City. The matches are part of Mexico’s preparations for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia later this year.

“Being called up to Mexico once again means a lot, especially being able to play against a top country like Brazil,” said Barajas. “Although the games against Brazil are friendlies, they are equally as important as if we were facing them at a competitive level. The games will help us see where we stand and where we need to improve ahead of the U-17 World Cup.”

Barajas (19 caps, seven goals) returns to the youth national team for the first time since leading Mexico in capturing the Concacaf U-17 Championship title back in February. The attacker a centerpiece of Raúl Chabrand’s squad, tallying three goals and five assists across all seven matches en route to the trophy.

Mexico will face Brazil on June 27th in Toluca and again on June 30th at the High Performance Center of the Mexican Football Federation in the country’s capital.

The 17-year-old heads to Mexico on the heels of a successful first full season as a professional with the Battery so far, having scored two goals and recording a league-leading five assists (tied) across all 17 of Charleston’s USL Championship matches.

Following the matches in Mexico, Barajas will return to Charleston for the club’s July 12th away fixture against Indy Eleven.
