Congressional Candidate Mac Deford Condemns South Carolina Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion Ban
Mac Deford, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, today vehemently condemned the state Supreme Court’s ruling that the state’s six-week abortion ban was constitutional.
The following is Deford’s statement:
“The impact of extreme abortion bans cannot be overstated. I know this all too well, as my maternal grandmother lost her life to a backroom abortion as a result of an extreme abortion ban in 1960’s pre-Roe v. Wade America. This devastated my family when my grandfather, without his wife, could no longer care for his eight children, forcing my mother and her siblings into a broken foster care system. I will not stand by and allow history to repeat itself, not in South Carolina, not in America.
It’s 2023, not 1960. We’ve come so far since the days when women like my grandmother lost their lives due to extreme abortion bans. We had a framework under Roe v. Wade that worked for our country. It’s shameful that we lost Roe’s protections, but that shouldn’t result in rolling back the clock to a dangerous time for women. We should be moving forward, not retreating into the injustices of the past.”
If elected, Deford said he will:
- Advocate for national protections for a woman’s right to choose, ensuring that every woman, regardless of what state she lives in, has access to safe and legal reproductive healthcare
- Promote comprehensive reproductive healthcare services for women, including contraceptives and preventative care
- Staunchly oppose any attempts to enforce extreme abortion bans that put women’s lives at risk, whether at the state or federal level
