Defense of Democracy to Host Panel Discussion on Threats to the Public Education System

Published

on

On August 31st at 6 pm, Defense of Democracy will host a panel discussion where leaders in the fight for civil rights will discuss “the growing threat to our public education system by extreme groups.” Topics will include book bans, school board elections, and how community members can “stand together and protect children and community in the face of fascism.”

This panel will be moderated by Karen Svoboda, President/CEO of Defense of Democracy, a national nonpartisan organization mobilizing communities throughout the country to protect our schools. Defense of Democracy has been featured in numerous articles and has been a leader in facilitating the growing resistance to censorship and fear brought into schools by extremists. Defense of Democracy advocates for pro-democracy candidates, mentors school board candidates, and provides tools and education that marginalized communities can use to safeguard their rights and the rights of all of their children.

Panel members include representatives from the ACLU, Lowcountry Black Parents Association, The Rainbow Youth Project, and the South Carolina Education Association. Admission is free, but registration is required. Refreshments will be served.
