Junior League of Charleston Collecting Diapers for National Diaper Bank Awareness Week

Starting on Monday, September 18th, the Junior League of Charleston (JLC) Diaper Bank will be hosting diaper drives in conjunction with National Diaper Need Awareness Week, an initiative created by the National Diaper Bank Network to draw attention and mobilize community efforts to end diaper need, an often overlooked and hidden consequence of poverty.

There are several ways the community can support the JLC Diaper Bank and National Diaper Need Awareness Week, September 18th to 24th, to help spread awareness and address this critical and ongoing need in our community. 

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

• Host a diaper drive: The JLC encourages neighborhoods, schools and local businesses to host their own drives to increase awareness of the Diaper Bank, and its mission throughout the Tri-County area. Register here: https://linktr.ee/diaperbank. The JLC Diaper Bank will provide all materials including a diaper drive toolkit, sign and barrel.
• Dollars for Diapers: Make a monetary donation to the JLC Diaper Bank campaign or shop virtual wish lists here: https://linktr.ee/diaperbank.
• Donate Diapers: Drop-off unused, disposable diapers and pull-up training pants of any brand, size, and type, including open packages, at the JLC office located at 51 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29407. There is a donation barrel located on the front porch for donations at any time.
• Drive-By Donate & Brunch: On Saturday, September 23d, from 10 am to 12 pm, community members can drive through the parking lot of InterveneMD to drop-off diapers and receive a complimentary breakfast item. InterveneMD is located at 1341 Old Georgetown Rd., Mt. Pleasant.

Diapers donated to the JLC Diaper Bank will be distributed to fifteen (15) community partner organizations to ease daily financial burden facing many families throughout the Lowcountry. Monetary donations will be used to purchase the most needed diaper sizes, including sizes 4, 5, 6 and pull-ups.

In addition, the JLC Diaper Bank offers volunteer opportunities to students and community members. Diaper bundling shifts are scheduled monthly on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Contact diaperbank@jlcharleston.org to RSVP.

My teenager and I love to team up at diaper shifts to open, sort, wrap and count diapers, and we would love for you to join us!”

Nearly half (47%) of U.S. families with young children struggle to afford diapers, according to the initial findings of The NDBN Diaper Check 2023: Diaper Insecurity Among Children and Families, a nationally representative study commissioned by the National Diaper Bank Network.  The findings of The NDBN Diaper Check 2023 reveal a growing need for material basic necessities among families across the United States. No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers; WIC and SNAP are nutrition-based programs and do not cover diapers. Without a sufficient supply of diapers, parents have to choose between buying food, diapers, or other basic necessities. 

Since inception in 2017, the JLC Diaper Bank has distributed more than 822,600 diapers and pull-up training pants to more than 16,450 families in need.

Diaper need is an ongoing issue, and the community is encouraged to support the JLC Diaper Bank so it can continue providing services to area families.
