Gibbes Museum of Art to Host Pay What You Will Days
Press Release
The Gibbes Museum of Art is excited to announce a series of “pay what you will” days. General admission ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, but on four select Saturdays, visitors may pay what they wish. The dates are September 23rd, 2023; December 16th, 2023; March 30th, 2024; and June 22nd, 2024.
“The museum’s mission is to enhance lives through art,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “We hope this opportunity to visit the museum, at any cost, will encourage new visitors and those who haven’t visited the museum recently, to re-discover the Gibbes and be inspired by our city’s visual arts.”
Charleston’s only art museum, the Gibbes is home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The museum’s permanent collection boasts an exciting and growing modern and contemporary collection including works by Mary Jackson, Kara Walker, Jonathan Green and Barkley Hendricks. In addition, visitors can discover 18th and 19th-century landscapes and portraits, 20th-century impressionist objects, the most comprehensive public collection on the Charleston Renaissance (1915–1940), and outstanding miniature portraits on ivory.
With a permanent collection of 10,000 objects, rotating special exhibitions, and a vibrant Visiting Artist program, there is always something new to see. The dates of the “pay what you will” days will coincide with the exhibitions The Bitter Years: Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans Photographs from the Martin Z. Margulies Collection (September 8, 2023 – January 14, 2024); Something Terrible May Happen: The Art of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward “Ned” I.R. Jennings (October 20,2023 – March 10, 2024); and Rory McEwen: New Perspectives on Nature (January 26, 2024 – April 28, 2024).
The museum is located at 135 Meeting Street in Charleston’s Historic District. On Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm.
