Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach to Open Public Playground on Johns Island
Press Release
Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach invites the public to attend the grand opening celebration for their new public playground on September 30th, 2023 from 11 am to 2 pm at their Johns Island location,1684 Brownswood Rd., Johns Island.
The celebration event is free and will showcase activities for the whole family, where attendees can enjoy the new playground, a jump castle, face painting, balloon animals, kids crafts, music, food, Kona Ice and beer from local brewery Low Tide Brewing. Community resources will be on campus to provide information on assistance programs in the area.
The playground will provide children and families with a safe environment to play on Johns Island and will be open sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. The new structure is suitable for children aged two to 13 and replaces the previous, aging playground that was over 30 years old, and was only possible after a successful campaign raised enough funds to build the new space.
“This space would not be possible without the incredible generosity of our supporters who helped make year-long project happen,” says Executive Director Jermaine Husser.
This playground will be regularly used during the Yes, I Can! afterschool tutoring program, Monday – Thursday, where Angel Oak Elementary School students come for homework assistance and social and emotional learning. This is the first time since the organization’s inception that the playground is open to the public.
“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive organization, providing access to vital resources for those in the community. Allowing access to a safe open space and creating more recreational opportunities are important, and we hope this playground will be enjoyed for more generations of families in the area,” says Husser.
