Press Release

Governor Henry McMaster has declared September Kinship Care Month. Let’s take a moment to honor and appreciate the selfless dedication of kinship caregivers who provide unwavering love and support to those in need. Join HALOS in celebrating Kinship Care Month and expressing our heartfelt gratitude to these unsung heroes who are the heart and soul of our communities.

Kinship care occurs when an adult with a relationship to a child steps in to raise the child when they cannot be with their parents. At HALOS, we love to see a spotlight on these grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, neighbors, friends and more who support children and keep them connected to their community and culture.

Long before foster care or child welfare agencies existed, families stepped up to care for their own, and we believe that recognizing and valuing kinship care is the key to improving our child and family service system. The number of kinship families served by HALOS has doubled in the last few years and continues to grow.

No matter the type – brief and informal, extended, or permanent custody – kinship care makes a positive difference in the lives of children. Celebrate these family heroes with us this month!
