Press Release

The Grand Bohemian Gallery Charleston will have EnChroma glasses on display from now through the end of September for color blind locals and tourists to experience art in full color. At the end of the month, one lucky applicant will win the EnChroma glasses.

One in 12 men (8%) and one in 200 women (0.5%) are color blind. People with red-green Color Deficiency (“color blindness”) only see 10% of the one million hues and shades visible to those with regular color vision. At work, school, in daily life, or when exploring nature or viewing artwork, it can be difficult for them to see and experience red and green and colors containing them.

Nearly 50% of color blind people don’t find out they’re color blind until after the 7th grade, and almost 20% not until after high school, according to EnChroma. Please test your color vision, and that of your kids or students, in under two minutes at: https://EnChroma.com/pages/tests

EnChroma’s patented color blind lens technology has revolutionized the way people with red-green color blindness can see the world. Developed almost two decades ago, they’ve continually combined the latest in color perception neuroscience, optical dyes, lens material innovations, and manufacturing techniques to deliver color blind glasses that are scientifically proven to stimulate the brain’s color processing center and enhance color vision. What better place to try them than inside an art gallery with the Grand Bohemian.

Terms for entry, per EnChroma:

  1. Applicants must submit their EnChroma color blindness test result to apply to prove they, or the person in their life for whom they’re applying, is color blind.
  2. You must NOT wear or need prescription glasses for other vision issues besides reading or driving (wearing contact lenses is fine).
  3. We’ll video and post their reaction to trying the glasses the first time, tagging the Gallery social media accounts as well as EnChroma.

Visit the Gallery to use the EnChroma glasses during normal gallery hours, Monday – Thursday, 10AM-6PM, Friday-Saturday, 10AM-7PM, and Sunday, 10AM-5PM from now through the end of the month. Or join us for an upcoming special event to see true colors while meeting the artists:

Elaine Schloss Artist Demonstration & Reception:

Friday, September 22nd, 4PM-7PM

Saturday, September 23rd, 11AM-4PM

“and yet we co-exist” by Taylor + Connor Robinson Exhibition Closing Reception:

Saturday, September 30th, 2PM-6PM

This gallery program is thanks to our favorite Hotel Accountant, David Knauff, who also happens to be color blind. He will be receiving one pair of EnChroma glasses as thanks for his constant support. Our participation is also in honor of Wes Emmons, who would have been happy as a pig in mud to see in true color, but never got the chance. Wes’ granddaughter, the gallery’s Director, would love to experience these moments with you and your family in his memory.

Grand Bohemian Hotel – Grand Bohemian Gallery is located at 55 Wentworth Street.
