Veterans Day 5k Being Held at The Citadel on November 12th
The inaugural Veterans Day 5K will take place on Sunday, November 12th at 9 am on the campus of The Citadel. The event is open to the public and requires registration. Registration includes a chip-timed 5K run/walk, finisher’s medal, long-sleeved shirt, and refreshments. Active military and veterans receive a special bib denoting their military service as well as a reduced entry fee.
Proceeds from the 5K will benefit two organizations that directly support local veterans: the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care food pantry and the Lowcountry Veterans Organization.
The VA Health Clinic’s food pantry distributes food to local veterans and advises on nutrition and health. The Lowcountry Veterans organization provides transitional housing to homeless veterans in the Charleston area, housing up to 300 veterans each year in drug and alcohol-free environments. They also provide food and transportation, and facilitate educational and employment opportunities to help veterans find stable employment and housing.
Just as important as the financial support, the Veterans Day 5K provides moral support. We can help heal the invisible wounds to our veterans’ morale by showing them that they matter to us and by increasing awareness of these wounds.
At the 5K, runners and walkers can learn more about these invisible wounds, how to assess the risk of suicide, and how to get help for veterans at risk of hunger, homelessness or suicide.
