177 Animals Brought to Charleston Animal Society in 72 Hours

The Charleston Animal Society is urgently calling upon the community to step forward and adopt pets as the shelter continues to face what they say is an unprecedented overcapacity crisis.

In just the past 72 hours, a staggering 177 dogs and cats have been brought to Charleston Animal Society, exacerbating the already critical issue of overpopulation faced by animal shelters here and across the country.

“By the end of September, we will see an intake of 1,000 animals — a number we haven’t seen in 10 years at this time of year,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President of Operations and Strategy Aldwin Roman, CAWA.

Since the inception of Charleston Animal Society, the organization has grappled with the challenge of providing shelter and care for more animals than it was originally designed to accommodate. “From day one when this shelter opened its doors in 2008, it has been overcapacity,” said Charleston Animal Society President and CEO Joe Elmore, CAWA, CFRE. “We need to get all government officials to the table to confront this crisis. As the Charleston area continues to see a record number of people move here, we continue to see more and more animals.”

Charleston Animal Society takes in 90% of Charleston County’s homeless animals.

You can visit the Charleston Animal Society this weekend and adopt, or tell a friend who is looking for a new pet, to visit the shelter. All animals available for adoption at Charleston Animal Society are spay-neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and behavior tested. You can visit 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston and see available animals at CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/Adopt.
