Press Release

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Lee Satterfield spoke to students at Ashley Ridge High School in Dorchester School District Two in Summerville, SC, on October 12th.

Connected to the school through her brother, ARHS Football Coach Shaun Satterfield, Assistant Secretary Satterfield engaged with students holding a variety of school leadership positions. Ms. Satterfield shared her journey of growing up in South Carolina, serving under three U.S. presidents, and strengthening U.S. government public diplomacy exchanges and programs. The ECA bolsters strategic U.S efforts to engage through cultural diplomacy, cultural heritage, and youth exchanges using a 360-degree approach to engage with the U.S. private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and like-minded nations and territories.

Assistant Secretary Satterfield said, “Sharing my passion for what we do at the Department of State with this community was a highlight of the year for me. The students are simply inspiring. I’m fortunate to be able to talk about all the important work we do, whether it’s about educational exchanges, cultural or sports diplomacy, or study abroad and career opportunities. The insightful questions from the high school students of Ashley Ridge were impressive and I hope to see them as our future diplomats, ambassadors, and career foreign affairs professionals.”

Principal Brooke Matthews said, “Ashley Ridge High School was truly honored to host a high-ranking State Department official, whose journey from South Carolina resonated deeply with our students. Assistant Secretary Satterfield’s presence not only showcased the possibilities that await those who pursue public service but also inspired our young minds to consider making a difference in their communities and beyond. We’ll always remember the wisdom she shared: Bloom where you’re planted, and regardless of your personal characteristics, no one can outwork you if you commit to success.”
