Exercises to Manage and Lessen the Effects of Vertigo

  1. Sit on the edge of your bed and place a pillow behind you. The pillow should be in a position low enough that it will sit between your shoulder blades when you lie back.
  2. Once the pillow is in place, turn your head to the left. Don’t strain or try to position your head parallel to your left shoulder. Instead, turn as far as possible without discomfort or twisting your torso.
  3. Keeping your head turned to the left, swiftly lie back until you’re flat on the mattress. Stay in this position until the feelings of vertigo subsided.
  4. Turn your head to the right without sitting up. Stay in this position for 30 seconds.
  5. Roll onto your right side until you can see the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  6. Slowly sit up and remain seated on the bed until your symptoms lessen. This should take 30 seconds.

The Semont Maneuver

  4. Slowly sit up and remain seated on the edge of the bed for 30 seconds.

Perform this maneuver three times each night.

The Brandt-Daroff Maneuver

Perform this maneuver three to five times in a row for each session, and do three sessions daily. Follow this routine for up to two weeks.

  1. Sit upright on the edge of your bed.
  2. Turn your head to look at the side opposite of your symptoms. (e.g., If your right side is affected, turn your head to the left.) Lie back and hang onto your side. Turn in a direction that will allow you to look up without moving the position of your head.
  3. Remain in this position for 30 seconds.
  4. Slowly sit up and remain seated until the vertigo symptoms pass.
  5. Repeat this process on the other side of your body.

Continue doing the Brandt-Daroff Maneuver until you have been symptom-free for two days.

The Foster Maneuver

This is one of the most straightforward exercises to do in treating vertigo naturally.

  1. Kneeling on the floor, look up at the ceiling. Hold this position for several seconds.
  2. Moving forward, touch your head to the floor and tuck your chin. Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  3. Remaining in this position, turn your head toward the affected side. Hold your head in this position for 30 seconds.
  4. As you rise onto your hands and knees, raise your head until it’s even with your spine. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Swiftly raise your head until it’s fully upright, but keep it turned toward the affected side of your body. Slowly stand up.

When performing the Foster Maneuver, take a 15-minute break between repetitions.
