S.O. Youth and Junior Philharmonic Kick Off Their Season in a “Spook-tacular” Way
The Summerville Orchestra (S.O.) Youth and Junior Philharmonic take to the Parkway Stage at the Coastal Carolina Fair on October 28th performing “Spook-tacular Strings,” highlighting Halloween favorites and other spooky tunes.
For their first concert of the season, these young artists will perform “The Addams Family” theme, “Highlights from Harry Potter,” and “221B Baker Street.” As the students have been preparing their music, Kaiden James, cello, expressed excitement about performing at Coastal Carolina Fair.
“I am beyond ecstatic to be playing in the Halloween Concert, particularly with one song where we use the theatrics of our instruments to make a positively horrifying experience for the listener,” James said.
The S.O. Youth and Junior Philharmonic, founded last September through a two-year $20,000 award from the South Carolina Arts Commission, has been continuously growing and expanding its involvement in the community. Last November, the Philharmonic teamed up with the S.O. for “A Salute to Young Artists,” and was joined by conductor/composer Chris Pilsner. Then in May, the youth musicians set sail with their first individual concert that took the audience on a journey across the high seas.
Director of Youth Program and conductor of the two groups, DeAnndra Glenn said, “It is so rewarding to see the youth orchestras growing involvement in the community by playing at events like Coastal Carolina Fair. I am very excited for the youth and junior philharmonics to perform this season and highlight the talents of these wonderful musicians.”
Saturday’s “Spook-tacular Strings” concert begins at 7:30 pm.
The S.O. Youth and Junior Philharmonics also will be performing at the Summerville Tree Lighting on Nov. 28th and on May 11th, 2024 for its end-of-season concert. For more information on the youth orchestra, visit SummervilleOrchestra.org/youth.
