Summerville Orchestra to Bring Stories to Life with “Fairy Tales and Folklore”
The Summerville Orchestra (S.O) continues its 20th season on November 3rd and 4th with “Fairy Tales and Folklore,” featuring the vibrant soundscapes of stories old and new with music from the Opera Hansel and Gretel, Disney Pixar’s movie Coco, Yoshimatsu’s enigmatic Suite “Kiyomori,” and soloist Ella Bougher on harp.
The concert opens with the overture from the Opera Hansel and Gretel, a lush blend of German folk and early 20th-century modernism. Chapters of Winter Vignettes by Eric Larsson and Dittersdorf’s Concerto in A Major for Harp and Orchestra performed by S.O. Concerto Competition winner, harpist Ella Bougher concludes the first half of the concert.
The second half opens with celebrating holidays happening in November with the S.O. performing Armed Forces Salute in honor of Veterans Day and Disney Pixar’s Coco celebrating Día de los Muertos (day of the dead).
The concert closes with the dramatic Suite “Kiyomori” by Takashi Yoshimatsu, which tells the story of 12th century samurai and military leader Kiyomori. The main theme was featured in the 2012 Japanese historical TV drama “Taira no Kiyomori.”
