MUSC: Credit Card Vendor Hacked – Patient Info Compromised

Published

on

As mentioned yesterday, multiple sources had told me about an upcoming security breach announcement involving South Carolina residents. I can now confirm the details.

Blackhawk Consulting Group, a third party credit card payment vendor used by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), recently had its software hacked, which led to the theft of thousands of MUSC patients’ personal information.

UPDATE: 9:38 am – MUSC has released information to the press, here’s what you need to know:

  • Blackhawk Consulting group has told MUSC that the personal information of about 7,000 patients was compromised.
  • The information that was breached includes: names, addresses, credit card numbers, credit card security numbers and e-mail addresses.
    • So far, no social security numbers, dates of birth, or medical information appears to have been stolen.
  • The people affected are patients (or a proxy) who payed a MUSC bill by credit card (online or by telephone) between June 30, 2013 and August 21, 2013. Those who paid in person or by mail were not effected.
  • MUSC recommends that anyone who believes they may have been affected should contact their credit card company or bank immediately.
  • MUSC is providing individuals whose information was compromised with free enrollment in a credit protection, monitoring and restoration service program through Experian.
  • The FBI has been notified.
  • More information is available on a MUSC website.
