Patriots Point Hosts Black History Month Symposium this Friday

Boys-of-Liberty-Hill-Program_Page_1-194x300This Friday, the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum will host a symposium featuring discussions on the history of North Charleston’s Liberty Hill community and its estimated 60 African-American men who left to fight in the Vietnam War.

The Black History Month event, The Boys of Liberty Hill, is free to attend. They sumposium will begin at 11 am in the USS Yorktown’s Smokey Stover Theater. If you cannot be there in person, the event will also be streamed through the Patriots Point Livestream channel.

The symposium with feature three guest panelists from Liberty Hill:

  • Odell Price
    • One of the original students to transfer out of Bonds-Wilson High School, a segregated African-American School, and into North Charleston High School in 1965
    • Fought as a Marine in the Vietnam War
  • Alfreda Levaine
    • Grew up in Liberty Hill during the 1960’s
    • Sister of one of eight Liberty Hill residents killed in the war
  • Charleston County Councilman Henry Darby
    • Author of Liberty Hill’s Vietnam Fighting Men

The event will also include local musicians Lonnie Hamilton and Ann Caldwell performing the National Anthem, and poetry reading from North Charleston High School students.
