heartsmendheartsLast month’s devastating shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church has left many residents struggling with feelings of grief, fear, anger and helplessness. A new initiative launched by Hearts Mends Hearts with the Charleston County Public Library aims to support locals by helping them tap into their creative processes.

Starting on Sunday, July 26th, local residents can work with experienced artists and mental health professionals during art-based sessions offered three days a week the Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street.

Drop-in art sessions will be offered on Sundays from 2 pm until 4:30 pm and Tuesdays from 5 pm – 7:30 pm. There will also be more structured workshops on Thursdays from 5 pm until 7:30 pm. All workshops will continue through the end of September. There is no age limit and no art experience is needed. Art materials are being provided.

The creative art process has been used as a coping mechanism in cities that have experienced similar tragedies like Newtown and Boston.
