The Gibbes Museum of Art announced a new special exhibition with works from contemporary artists examining the important place animals have occupied in art throughout history. Out of the Wild: Animals in Contemporary Art runs May 12 – September 24, 2017 and features 18 works in a variety of forms, including sculpture, mixed media and painting, and will be shown in conjunction with Artist, Scientist, Explorer: Mark Catesby in the Carolinas.

Inspired by works in the Gibbes’ permanent collection and several private collections, Out of the Wild highlights how three artists employ animal imagery to examine contemporary culture as well as the continuous, yet evolving relationship between humans and the natural world. While their works celebrate the form and natural beauty of both wild and domestic species, the artists also explore political, social, psychological and spiritual themes. On May 24, artist William Dunlap will visit the Gibbes to speak about his role as an artist to “create something out of nothing,” and to read excerpts from his book, Short Mean Fiction, followed by a book signing. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
