The fascinating history of Charleston’s culture, architecture, and hospitality comes alive during “The Fall Tours” from The Preservation Society of Charleston. The even features an assortment of private house tours, lunch lectures, walking tours, and behind-the-scenes programs.

Guests who want a self-paced tour may choose either a Traditional Tour or an abbreviated “Four for $40 Tour” to experience the interiors of these historic houses and gardens. Guides at each property will explain the architecture, relate the stories of the generations of people who lived there, and delve into the more recent efforts to preserve their histories.

Lunch lectures at 82 Queen will provide a more in-depth study as local historians and professionals discuss a variety of subjects. The events will cover Charleston’s architecture, its resilient people, and endearing gardens. One lecture will present a photography primer to enable you to better capture pictures of this beautiful city.

Guests will also have the opportunity to take one or more “Up Close and Personal” tours. Guests will go behind-the-scenes and tour seldom-seen houses and gardens. Topics will be in-depth and led by professional guides and instructors.

The Plantation Picnic Tour will visit the barrier island of Edisto with a picnic served along the way. Transportation is included.

New this year are unique opportunities to focus on Charleston’s architecture: “The Curated Architectural Experience.” Guests will study the iconic Charleston single house and other buildings and dwellings of the colonial period.

Finally, Guided Walking Tours will include the popular “Invention of Wings, The Grimke Sisters of Charleston,” and “Enduring Traditions, The Ironwork of Charleston.” For the family, there is a guided walking tour of “The Amazing Buildings of Charleston.” This tour will cover the ABCs of architecture in Charleston and is suitable for ages 8 and older.

Prices for tours and events vary and there are limited tickets for all events. Advance reservations are recommended. Tickets may be purchased online at www.thefalltours.org or by calling 1-800-514-3849.

Proceeds from the Fall Tours support the Preservation Society’s mission to preserve and honor Charleston’s unique material and cultural heritage.
