Charleston Basket Brigade To Feed 3,500 Familes on Thanksgiving; Seeks Volunteers for 11/21
The Charleston Basket Brigade (CBB), a local Charleston nonprofit celebrating its 10th Anniversary, has announced its goal for 2017: to raise $105,000 to feed 3,500 Charleston Tri-County families (approximately 21,000 people) again this year on Thanksgiving.
Community members are invited to volunteer to assemble and deliver meals to families on preset routes. Assembly starts at 7 am on Tuesday, November 21st at the Charleston Area Convention Center (Exhibit Hall C) and deliveries begin shortly after. A complete list of volunteer and donation opportunities are available at www.charlestonbasketbrigade.com.
It only takes $30 to feed a family of six to ten and every penny raised is utilized to purchase food. Each family receives a box of food to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal including a 10–12 lb. frozen turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls, and a pumpkin pie. Inside the box is an anonymous letter that reads, “This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.”
The CBB was founded in 2008 by close friends Pam Hartley and Michelle Scarafile. What started as a small effort feeding 75 families has grown to serve 3,500 families each year with the help of corporate partners including Carolina One Real Estate, raising money and volunteering for the effort; Lowcountry Grocers Piggly Wiggly, providing discounts on food and logistical donations; Communities In Schools locating our families in need; and Momentum Marketing, handling all public relations and marketing outreach, as well as event coordination. In the past nine years, the Charleston Basket Brigade has raised more than $640,000 and fed 21,339 families in need (approximately 128,000 people; as each meal feeds six to ten people).
The CBB is a 501-(c)(3) nonprofit. Individual and corporate donations are tax deductible and can be made online at www.CharlestonBasketBrigade.com. All major credit cards are accepted and 100 percent of the donations go towards buying food.
