The Finicky Filly Celebrates its 30th Anniversary

The Finicky Filly, a luxury women’s boutique located on King Street, is celebrating its 30th year in business. Rebecca Steinberg and Judy Casey, the mother-daughter team and owners of the business, provided Holy City Sinner will some reflections on the last three decades.

Despite having no experience, Judy Casey decided to open a shop in her home town of Middleburg, VA. The town was known for its hunting culture, so businesses had a history of naming its stores after horse or foxes. Keeping with that trend, the Finicky Filly was launched in 1988.

After Rebecca graduated from Catawba College, the pair decided to open a second store with Rebecca at the helm. Rebecca fell in love with Charleston during a vacation trip to the city and decided this would be the second store’s home. The Finicky Filly opened on King Street in 2000. Judy moved here in 2007 and now works along side Rebecca.

The stores have allowed the duo to give back to the community. They run fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House, the Lowcountry Food Bank, the humane society, and more.

Aside from their charitable work, Judy says her biggest source of pride has been mentoring young women. She has had four women work with her that went on to launch their own boutiques.
