Katie’s Krops Named a Finalist in The Atlantic’s 3rd Annual Renewal Awards
Katie’s Krops has been named a finalist in The Atlantic’s “The Renewal Awards,” a nationwide competition recognizing local organizations driving positive change in their communities and bringing progress to the country.
Online voting runs through Wednesday, February 21st at: TheAtlantic.com/Renewal-Awards.
The Renewal Awards seek to illuminate grassroots solutions to challenges faced by communities around the country in an unsettling economic era. Ultimately, five organizations will each receive a $20,000 grant from Allstate and five runners up will each receive a $10,000 grant from Allstate.
Katie’s Krops was started by College of Charleston student, Katie Stagliano in her hometown of Summerville, South Carolina. When she was only 9 years old, Katie Stagliano grew a 40-pound cabbage and donated it to Tri-County Family Ministries where it fed 275 people. This gave her the idea to empower youth from all over the country to also grow vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to feed people in need.
Fast forward to today and there are now Katie’s Krops Gardens all across the country. Locally there are gardens at: Pinewood Preparatory School (the flagship Katie’s Krops garden), Spann Elementary, Oaks Christian School, DuBose Middle School, Charleston School of the Arts, Doors to Freedom in Ridgeville, at numerous homes and new gardens will be sprouting up this spring at Hanahan Elementary and on James Island.
In 2017 Katie’s Krops donated 39,000 pounds of produce to people in need across the country. Katie and the whole Katie’s Krops growing family would appreciate your votes.
