South Carolina Aquarium Holland Lifelong Learning Finale to Take Place March 16th
The South Carolina Aquarium today announced the finale of the 2017-18 Holland Lifelong Learning series will take place March 16, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the Francis Marion Hotel. The program, titled “From Gigabytes to Nature Hikes: Connecting with the Outdoors in a Digital Age,” will take a deep dive into technology’s influence on the perception of nature and conservation of the natural world.
To begin the conversation, author Richard Louv will deliver a virtual presentation that addresses why humans need more nature as life becomes increasingly intertwined with technology. Louv first introduced the idea of nature-deficit disorder in his 2005 book, “Last Child in the Woods.”
Following the keynote, a panel of experts will examine how traditional and emerging technologies are shaping humans’ understanding of nature and wildlife. Panelists include:
- Danni Washington: host of FOX Network’s Xploration Nature Knows Best and co-founder of Big Blue & You, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring and educating youth about ocean conservation through arts and media. Big Blue & You encourages “ARTISTIC INSPIRATION FOR OCEAN CONSERVATION.”
- Scott Snider: a natural history filmmaker, South Carolina Aquarium board member, and accomplished cinematographer whose work has been featured on National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, PBS and more
- Brad Krey: an innovator and interpreter who uses videoconferencing to help schools teach common core state standards with California State Parks
Holland Lifelong Learning finale tickets can be purchased for $20; members and students can purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $10. A separate event, the South Carolina Aquarium’s annual Watershed dinner will take place immediately following the finale, and guests will have the opportunity to mingle with the panelists. Tickets to both the Holland Lifelong Learning finale and the Watershed dinner are available here.
The Holland Lifelong Learning series is generously underwritten by Mary and Mason Holland and will return in the fall of this year.
