Going Places to Host Bike Reveal for 300 Disadvantaged Kids; Volunteers Needed

On Tuesday, May 1st, local nonprofit Going Places will host their first surprise bike reveal since becoming a nonprofit. The event is part of their “give a bike. give joy.” program.

Last year, former teacher Katie Blomquist used GoFundMe to raise over $80,000 and then surprised all 650 kids at her school with a new bike. That initiative led to the creation of Going Places, which this year, will provide all 300 kids who attend Mt. Zion Elementary on Johns Island with “The Purpose,” a custom bike from Affordabike, along with a new lock and helmet.

Any extra bikes will be donated during “mini bike reveals” to the kids who qualify for free/reduced lunch, but attend the affluent area Mt. Pleasant elementary schools.

Want to be part of the joyous day? Going Places is seeking volunteers to help with the bike reveal set-up (7:45 am) and bike distribution (11:30 am – 6pm) to parents on May 1st, as well as a secondary bike distribution (8:30 am – 6pm) on May 2nd. We do that by providing EVERY child in a low income elementary school with a brand new, custom bike. The work founder, Katie Blomquist did last year went viral.
