Here are some of the latest stories and info from around town:

  1. A Youth Fishing Rodeo takes place on Saturday, May 5 from 8 am to noon at Village Pond located adjacent to the Amphitheater, at The Ponds (151 Village Ponds Drive, Summerville, SC). There is no charge to participate and pre-registration via the SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website is required. To register visit http://www.dnr.sc.gov/aquaticed/rodeos/registration.html.

    During the event, DNR staff help youth become better acquainted with the sport of fishing. Parents are reminded to bring chairs, fishing tackle, and extra bait (limited supply of worms available). Feel free to pack a picnic lunch and bring cold beverages, hats and sunscreen. Enter to win prizes, including a Lifetime Fishing License.

  2. SouthernCakeQueen & Carolima’s is hosting a roundtable discussion in honor of National Small Business Week May 2nd, 9am – 12pm at the Harbor Entrepreneur Center.

    Entrepreneurs and Future Entrepreneurs are invited to a roundtable discussion to discuss the five steps of starting a business, the importance of business insurance, and is entrepreneurship for you?  There will also be a panel of Small business owners ranging from 2 to 50 years in business. Click here for more info.

  4. Crescent Homes’ GIVE program had its most successful quarter to date. Donating $26,750 to local Charleston nonprofits in 2018 thus far, with CEO/Owner Ted Terry presenting checks to each organization Friday, April 6th. Since launching one year ago, the program has given a total of $89,250 to twenty local Charleston nonprofits. Five new groups have been selected to receive donations in Q2.

    GIVE by Crescent homes was founded in April 2017, the philanthropic program donates $250 for every home sale, selecting five new local foundations to support quarterly. New homebuyers are given information about each nonprofit and invited to choose which group will receive a donation in their name and encouraged to get involved.

    The following Charleston organizations received donations in the first quarter of 2018:

    • $5,800 to Pet Helpers
    • $6,000 to Darkness to Light
    • $5,400 to Operation Home
    • $4,350 to The Charleston Miracle League
    • $5,200 to One80 Place

    The GIVE program’s Q2 recipients are: Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach, Charleston chapter of Heroes On The Water (HOW), Charleston Parks Conservancy, Summerville Royal Family Kids Camp, Charleston County’s First Steps.
