Nation’s Largest One Day Food Drive is Saturday

Published

on

On Saturday, May 12th, the National Association of Letter Carriers hosts their 26th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This is the nation’s largest one day food drive and the public is encouraged to participate by placing non-perishable food items in or near their mailboxes.

All food donations in our area will be delivered to the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) where they will then be distributed to a network of soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other partners in our community.

This food drive is especially important to the LCFB as it prepares for the increased need for food assistance that comes in the summer months. While on summer break, many children do not have access to school feeding programs they need. It is estimated that 794,590 South Carolinians were food insecure – children represent 29%, or 225,550, of that total.

In 2017, “Stamp Out Hunger” collected 136,611 pounds of food for the tri-county area, which created 114,000 meals for food insecure children, seniors and families. To kick off the event this year’s event, Food Lion is making a 4,000 pound donation of nutritious and high protein food to the Lowcountry Food Bank.
