Slow Food Charleston Working to Save SC Peach Varietal; Announces Summer Potluck Event
On Sunday, June 24th, Slow Food Charleston will host a summer potluck at The Schoolhouse in collaboration with the Charleston Parks Conservancy. This free community event will include tours of Magnolia Community Garden, a bike valet by Charleston Moves, and mobile farmers market Lowcountry Street Grocery.
The summer potluck will launch the next phase of the “Lemon Cling Peach Project,” whose accordion to Slow Food Charleston has a goal of “repatriating this once favored varietal, notable for its taste, and for its superiority in brandy and preserves.” Two-hundred trees are being grown in Virginia and are expected to arrive in Charleston in late 2019 or early 2020. This long-range project aims to save a treasured fruit for future generations.
Produce donations are being collected from the Magnolia Community Garden with the Parks Conservancy, and from Lowcountry Local First’s Growing New Farmers Program with Middleton Place Plantation. These donations will be prepared into summer harvest potluck dishes. A peach-centric dessert will also be enjoyed, made possible by a donation of SC Grown peaches by GrowFood Carolina.
