Children Invited to Special Storytime Launching RiverDogs Summer Slugger Program Thursday
The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and the Charleston RiverDogs invite children of the Lowcountry to a special storytime that will kick off the Summer Slugger program. Summer Slugger, a RiverDogs and Minor League Baseball initiative, is aimed at preventing the summer slide by offering kids ages eight to 12, free baseball-themed games that reinforce key math and literacy skills.
The storytime will feature more information about the Summer Slugger program, Charleston RiverDogs players, Charlie the RiverDog, and CCPL’s Owlbert. The gathering will take place on Thursday, July 12th at 10:30 am at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library (1133 Mathis Ferry Road).
Registration for the Summer Slugger program is easy – visit everfi.com/register and enter the code RIVERDOGS to create an account. Topics of the games include spelling, units of measurement, geometry and more. Participants can create their own custom avatar that will guide them through the games and help them earn points and progress-based rewards. The Summer Slugger program is brought to you by Major League Baseball and Everfi. To learn more, visit www.summerslugger.com.
CCPL and the Charleston RiverDogs are also partners for the CCPL Summer Reading programs, which provide prizes as incentives for reading throughout the summer months. Children (ages four to 11) who reach a five-hour reading level and teens (ages 12-18) who reach 500 points will receive a voucher to redeem a ticket to the Celebrating Reading Night at the RiverDogs game on July 29th. The games starts at 5:05 pm and the gates open at 4 pm. During the game, CCPL and the RiverDogs will celebrate all of this year’s Summer Reading participants and will feature Owlbert throwing the first pitch and giveaways of his new book “Owlbert Finds A Home” to the first 500 people who visit the CCPL booth.
Tickets can be redeemed early online. For more information on how to redeem your tickets, visit https://www.ccpl.org/summeronline/prizes-for-kids.
“We encourage participants redeem their tickets online or in advance at the Box Office to avoid long lines the day of the game,” said RiverDogs Director of Community Relations Walter Nolan-Cohn. “Participants who redeem online also get the benefit of a discount price on extra tickets. So, parents of children who earned a ticket will get their ticket for a discounted price of $7.”
Please note that a $2 convenience fee will apply for online tickets. However, tickets can also be redeemed at the RiverDogs Box Office, located at 360 Fishburne St. in Charleston, with no additional charge.
Participants are asked to wear their reading medals to the game. As a bonus, the first 100 children wearing their medal that visit the CCPL booth inside the stadium will receive a RiverDogs Kids Zone pass, which includes access to a jump castle, inflatable slide and virtual reality baseball.
