Charleston Native J. Ryan Condon Named Belmont Abbey College Alumnus of the Year

At its upcoming Homecoming Festivities, Belmont Abbey College will present Charleston small-businessman, J. Ryan Condon with the Brother Gregory Corcoran Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. Mr. Condon graduated from Belmont Abbey in 1970 and currently owns and operates a number of restaurants in the Charleston area.  

As a student at Belmont Abbey, Mr. Condon majored in business and economics. He played intramural sports and volunteered at the Dallas, NC Correctional Institution. Upon graduation, Mr. Cordon returned to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina where he began his career in the Army Reserves. He then worked in the Charleston real estate market and later, found an entrepreneurial passion in the restaurant industry. Many of his Charleston area restaurants are very well-known.  In particular, his Folly Beach Crab Shack was named one of South Carolina’s 10 Best Seafood Spots by Southern Living Magazine. Mr. Condon is also an active philanthropist in the Charleston community, often fundraising for cancer research.

Mr. Condon’s philanthropy is not contained to Charleston.  He is also the current president of the Belmont Abbey College Alumni Association Board. He also often attends alumni events and provides catering to many of them. Mr. Condon is honored to receive the award, saying, “For someone who struggled through school, this award means a great deal.”

The Brother Gregory Corcoran Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award is given biannually to recognize the achievements of the graduates of Belmont Abbey College.  It brings the accomplishments of the alumni to the attention of all alumni, students, faculty, the monastic community and members of the BAC community. The Alumnus of the Year must be someone “exemplifies the ideals of the College, assists Belmont Abbey through his or her efforts with reunions, alumni events, fundraising, admissions, or any area where the College needs a volunteer.”  Past recipients of the award include fellow entrepreneur Doug Ehmann and Brigadier General James M. Mead, USMC.
