The Lonon Foundation, a local non-profit serving children affected by their parent or caregiver’s cancer diagnosis through their program UPLIFT, will host its 3rd Annual Hike for Mike on Saturday, December 1st starting at 9 am. The community is invited to join them at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center, where participants of all ages will be able to enjoy a 3-mile hike with friends and family.

Admission to this family-friendly event includes arts and crafts, face painting, a free hot chocolate and muffin bar, live music, and interactive activities for the kids. Kids will meet real Disney Princesses, and every child will receive a goodie bag from Wonder Works. Plus, the MacDaddy Mac and Cheese food truck will be on-site from 11 am to 1 pm.

A silent auction to raise funds for the Foundation’s UPLIFT Program, which provides free monthly activities for children 6-17 years old affected by their parent or caregiver’s cancer diagnosis, will be open from 9 am to 11:30 am, with items from local businesses such as Half Moon Outfitters, Alex + Ani, Mellow Mushroom, Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Kittsona, The Alley, Cyclebar, Wonder Works, and more.

Children 12 and under are free, and adult tickets are $35, which includes a Comfort Colors t-shirt. Tickets are available at hikeformike.eventbrite.com

The Lonon Foundation began after Anna Lonon lost her husband, Mike Lonon, to cancer and knew her children needed a way to cope with the loss of their father. Realizing that she did not have the resources, physically or emotionally, to help them, she knew others must be in the same situation and like her, would need help.

The Lonon Foundation strives to create a community for children coping with their parent or caregiver’s battle with cancer to grow and heal from their shared experiences, and the Hike for Mike is just one of the ways in which the Foundation works to achieve this goal.

Throughout the year, the UPLIFT program meets at various kid-friendly venues throughout Charleston to engage in fun and healthy activities with a community of people dedicated to helping them grow and heal from their experiences.

The UPLIFT program is sponsored by the College of Charleston and is run by trained student volunteers. All student volunteers complete Darkness to Light training as well as attend a volunteer workshop with graduate students from the College of Charleston Science in Child Life (MSCL) Program. These students engage in various fundraising campaigns on and off campus to support UPLIFT, making sure each event is free for every child.
