Take Steps For Crohn’s & Colitis on 11/4
On Sunday, November 4th, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s (CFF) Charleston Take Steps Walk will be held at Wannamaker Park starting at 1 pm. Take Steps is a family friendly community celebration dedicated to raising mission critical funds and awareness of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two painful, debilitating digestive diseases that affect 1 in 200 Americans, including 80,000 children nationwide.
2018 marks a special “decade of difference” for Take Steps. Since its inception ten years ago, Take Steps has brought together more than 300,000 people and raised over $85 million to help further the Foundation’s mission.
“Today, these digestive diseases can be treated, but not cured,” Community Manager Paulette Purnell said. “That’s why CCF invests in research toward a cure and better quality of life.”
This year, Patty Townsend will be honored as the local caregiver. Townsend understands first-hand how difficult these diseases can be. In 2009, her 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and in 2011 she had a proctocolectomy. As the caregiver of, Townsend is committed to finding a cure and raising funds for research.
Thousands of people will gather this year at more than 100 walk sites in local communities across the country. Take Steps Charleston has raised over $60,000 for research and patient support services and has set a goal to raise $20,000 in 2018. Funds raised through Take Steps will directly impact vital treatment, research, and life-giving patient programs for 1.6 million Americans who live with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
The walks are family-friendly festivals dedicated to patients and their families and serves as a celebration for all the hard work and dedication of the community. Charleston will experience the impact of ten years of Take Steps walks with a Decade of Difference area featuring an interactive ten-year timeline.

About Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affects 1 in 200 people. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn’s disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery.
