Charleston Symphony Hosting Several Holiday Concerts
Charleston Symphony has a number of shows coming up for you to enjoy during the holidays. Plus, they are offering several tickets discounts to ease the holiday pain your wallet may be experiencing.The organization is running a promotion through Christmas Eve called Pick 3, in which you can receive 20% off when you buy tickets to 3 or more Masterworks/Pops shows this season. Here’s a look at the holiday schedule:
HOLIDAY BRASS WITH DOC SEVERINSEN & PHIL SMITH
- 7:30 pm on December 4th at the Gaillard Center
- Doc Severinsen was the bandleader for the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and is a living legend among fans of brass music (and the Tonight Show). He is 91 years old and still touring. Phil Smith is the former principal trumpet player for the New York Philharmonic, and is regarded as the Yo Yo Ma of trumpet players. Both will be performing with the CSO Brass Ensemble
- All prime seats (including front rows and box seats) are $45 with code DOC45. That promotion will be running through the day of the show

HOLY CITY MESSIAH
- December 6th at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (120 Broad Street)
- December 8th at the East Cooper Baptist Church (361 Egypt Rd, Mt Pleasant)
- December 9th at the St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church (11001 Dorchester Road, Summerville)
- “Hallelujah!” Few excerpts are familiar to as many and Messiah remains Handel’s best-known work. There is no better time of year to enjoy his sacred oratorio that has long been associated with good will and charity
- Become a part of the CSO holiday tradition as Maestro Ken Lam conducts their version, Holy City Messiah, with the CSO Chamber Chorus and four guest soloists
SWINGIN’ CHRISTMAS WITH TONY DESARE
- 7:30 pm on December 11th at the Gaillard Center
- Part of the CSO’s Pops series
- DeSare is a Frank Sinatra-style crooner who is returning to sing holiday hits while the orchestra plays
HOLIDAY POPS
- 7:30 pm on December 22nd at the Gaillard Center

classics like Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, as well as hits like Sleigh Ride, Chanukah Song, Go Tell It On the Mountain, and the CSO’s special rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas

BEETHOVEN’S 5TH
- 7:30 pm on both January 4th and 5th at the Gaillard Center
- Perhaps the most recognizable piece of classical music ever written, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony rose to international prominence during World War II, when the BBC used the symphony’s famous four-note opening to preface daily radio broadcasts. Mimicking the sound of the letter “V” in Morse code (dot-dot- dot-dash), the first few notes of Beethoven’s 5th became closely associated with the Allied Forces’ quest for victory, and ultimately gave this masterpiece its nickname, “the Victory Symphony.”

- Pre-concert talks are given by Assistant Conductor Kellen Gray at 6:30 pm in the Gaillard Center Auditorium
- This concert will also feature the world premiere of a piece by local CofC music professor and composer Yiorgos Vassilandonakis
