Junior League of Charleston Presents Final Whale of Sale on March 2nd
The 45th Annual Whale of a Sale, a garage sale and fundraiser for the Junior League of Charleston (JLC), will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, at the Pine Point Shopping Plaza (1964 Ashley River Rd.) from 8 am to 1 pm. The event is free and open to the public. A preview party, also open to the public, will be held the evening prior from 6 pm to 9 pm.
“This will be the final year of this much-anticipated Charleston tradition, and we’re sunsetting the Whale with a big splash,” Beth Bailey, president of the Junior League of Charleston said. “We have solicited everything from refrigerators to linens, clothing to small appliances, home accessories to furniture – just about anything someone could need can be found at the sale. We’re determined to make this one of the biggest Whales ever.”
Bailey said that escalating venue rental rates and competition from online sites like eBay and Craigslist have contributed to the decision to discontinue the event.
“In the event’s 45 years, the JLC has raised over $1 million for community projects like the Saturday Soup Kitchen, Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center – both started by the JLC – and myriad other non-profits,” Bailey said. “Next year and beyond, we will continue to support community projects through new opportunities and our other fundraisers, such as the Bridal Boutique, the Little Black Dress Initiative and through sales from JLC products.”
The Whale of a Sale is not only a fundraising event to generate income for the JLC community programs; it also serves the community, providing those in need with low cost, quality items. The event features gently-used items including furniture, appliances, clothes, computer equipment, electronics, books, children’s toys, baby items, holiday decorations and even fine china and silver, all of which are sold at bargain prices. Net proceeds from the event will be reinvested in the community through the JLC’s projects, such as The Diaper Bank, which provides free diapers to low-income families.
Tickets are $45 per person and available online at www.jlcharleston.org/whale.
