The Saint Hotel Design Revisions Approved Unanimously by Board of Architectural Review
Press Release
–
At the Charleston Board of Architectural Review (BAR) on March 27, Goff D’Antonio Associates, architects for the owner of The Saint Hotel Charleston, presented a request for final approval for revision to the façade material, balcony rail detail and location of rail planters for the previously-approved new construction of the 5-story boutique hotel. The revision requests were passed unanimously by the Board.
The Saint Hotel, currently under construction at 194 East Bay Street in the French Quarter Historic District, is scheduled to open in early 2020. The hotel will offer panoramic views of the city and Historic District from its 45 rooms. There will be one rooftop 1,000 sq. ft. suite with a large glass-wrapped terrace and a 500 sq. ft. deck.
The Saint Hotel’s overall design can be described as contemporary classical with a strong base and a top cornice, with a more contemporary penthouse-like element on the roof. The middle portion of the façade has changed from stucco to brick in a red-brown color that fits into the Charleston French Quarter Historic District context and creates a nice contrast to the light colored cast stone at the base, around the window trim and cornice. The windows are vertically proportioned and deeply inset into the façade.
The iron railings have received a richer and more ornate pattern and have been designed in collaboration with a local blacksmith in order to incorporate local craft into the design. Forty-two floral rail planters on the balconies will contain colorful flowers perfect for the neighborhood.
“With its unparalleled location, I want to ensure that The Saint Hotel Charleston will be a refined luxury boutique hotel that will complement the history and beauty of East Bay Street in the French Quarter Historic District. Working with Charleston city officials, Goff D’Antonio architects and Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review, I have taken great care to respect the history and culture of Charleston,” said D. Mark Wyant, Owner & Developer, The Saint Hotels. “The classic character and scale of the hotel’s beautiful architecture design fits within the context of the historic buildings in the neighborhood.”
“I have deep admiration for the sanctity of Charleston’s historic location, colonial past and reputation for outstanding hospitality. My primary goal is to embody and respect the legacy, charm and history of Charleston,” Wyant continued.
The BAR was established in 1931 with the creation of the first preservation ordinance in the United States. As stated in the City of Charleston Zoning Ordinance, the purpose of the board is “the preservation and protection of the old historic or architecturally worthy structures and quaint neighborhoods which impart a distinct aspect to the city, and which serve as visible reminders of the historical and cultural heritage of the city, the state, and the nation.”
Within the historic districts, the BAR reviews all new construction, alterations and renovations visible from the public right-of-way. In reviewing alterations to historic properties and proposed new structures, the BAR adheres to the principles established by the Charleston Standards.
