Author and photographer Charlotte Caldwell’s The Faces of Local Food: Celebrating the People Who Feed Us, a tribute to South Carolina’s slow food culture, earned the Gold Medal for Best Regional Non-fiction: Southeast in the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Awards competition.

“I am shocked and so honored,” Caldwell, a James Island resident, said.

The Faces of Local Food is a collection of over fifty portraits, stories, and narratives, providing readers with “an intimate glimpse into the lives of the people who contribute to the Lowcountry’s vibrant local food system. According to a press release, readers will “join fishermen, farmers, and ranchers on their boats and in their fields; into the kitchens of innovative chefs; into the warehouse of a local food hub; and we meet with other meaningful contributors and visionaries to hear their stories—their histories, motivations, experiences, challenges, and insights.”
