Press Release

Now in its 43rd year, the Preservation Society of Charleston’s annual Fall Tours are better than ever with fresh, new programs and longtime favorites. Experience Charleston’s stunning private houses, intimate gardens, churches, and public buildings as you stroll through our historic streets. The Fall Tours serve as the Society’s foremost annual fundraiser.

Curated Tours, Garden Walks, and Talks. In its third year, this series of tours will let guests dig deeper into what makes Charleston gardens so unique. From the interesting and largely sub-tropical plant material to the fresh designs, these gardens are sure to delight all of the senses. Led by professionals in the fields of horticulture and design, guests will visit gardens that are rarely open to the public. A professional in the field of horticulture and design will lead guests through gardens focusing on the challenges and triumphs of gardening in the Lowcountry.

Photography Walkabout and Workshop. Richard D. Spencer has studied the City and learned the best times to photograph the many architectural elements and details of some of Charleston’s oldest and most picturesque streets and alleys. He will share his tips and techniques each Friday morning on a walkabout. Photographers and cameras of all levels are welcome.

Traditional House and Garden Tours. For 43 years these tours have opened some of America’s most exquisite homes and gardens to our guests. Each residence in the Old and Historic District – built in Colonial days up to and through the 20th century – tells its own story. Docents at each site will greet you and share the rich history of those who lived there.

Haunts and Haints: Spirits Among Us. Known as the Holy City for its many houses of worship, Charleston is also known for its many spirits. In addition to learning about our architecture and history, guests will hear about several notable spirits in our city. This tour is only offered on October 27, to bring out the darker side of Charleston for Halloween.

Morning History Walks and Talks. The breadth of Charleston’s history and charm can only be appreciated  by strolling its historic streets. Led by certified guides, get the inside scoop on stunning architecture and

craftsmanship while learning about the fascinating people and the stories that helped shape our city. Guided walks include focused topics such as abolition, architecture, ironwork, gardens, women, graveyards, and general  history.

The Preservation Society is committed to supporting sustainable and responsible tourism in Charleston. We continue  to reduce the footprint of The Fall Tours while enhancing the educational content, proving that heritage tourism can offer a higher quality experience while being more sensitive to the resources we aim to  protect.

Limited tickets are available and advance reservations are recommended. For more information on The Fall Tours  and to purchase tickets, visit preservationsociety.org or call 843-405-1050.
