Charleston Promise Neighborhood Receives Grant to Help Fund After-School Programming

This summer, Charleston Promise Neighborhood (CPN) was one of 23 nonprofit organizations to receive Community Enrichment Grant funding from Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. The Community Enrichment Grant is issued to South Carolina nonprofits who implement best practices to address the root causes of poverty.

“Our Community Enrichment grantee partners go beyond the expectation of assisting people who experience poverty – they work to interrupt the cycle of poverty altogether,” Tom Keith, president of Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, said. “The Foundation applauds their work to address the root causes of poverty in their respective communities.”

CPN is going into their sixth year of after-school programming at Sanders-Clyde Elementary and Mary Ford Elementary, wherein they serve over 250 students each day. Through these programs, children are given the opportunity to expand their learning time with CPN-funded certified teachers and staff, as well as receive a hot meal before they go home for the day.

They are also given the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities through CPN-funded enrichment providers. This could be anything from basket weaving to soccer practice! The grant from Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC will aide in not only continuing, but also expanding this program to make it an even better experience for the children in our schools.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Sisters of Charity Foundation for a second year,” Sherrie Snipes-Williams, CEO of Charleston Promise Neighborhood, said. “We look forward to implementing this funding to enhance our programming, to further impact the lives of our children.”

This year’s Community Enrichment grant recipients serve 27 South Carolina counties, and several of these nonprofits provide services across the state.

Charleston Promise Neighborhood (CPN) is a nonprofit organization incorporated in May 2010, whose vision and purpose is to transform the “Neighborhood” within a generation. The CPN Neighborhood, home to just under 27,000 residents—6,500 of whom are children under the age of 20—is a 5.6 square mile area of Charleston County that straddles portions of the cities of Charleston and North Charleston, and coincides with the attendance zones of four CCSD elementary schools with high concentrations of children living in poverty: Chicora, James Simons, Mary Ford and Sanders-Clyde.
