Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry Offers Play-Based Educational Programs and Special Events This Fall

The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry (CML) has announced their fall programming lineup and upcoming special events. A team of professional educators designed targeted programs and experiences for the museum that aim to spark children’s imagination and stimulate curiosity through the power of play.

“At the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, we present our programs with an emphasis on social and emotional development, process-based and child-focused learning techniques while our content supports academic outcomes for children ages birth to 10-years-old,” Nichole Myles, executive director, said. “We are looking forward to welcoming children and families to the museum this fall to experience our unlimited learning adventures, special events and holiday camps.”

Weather Reports

CML has launched “weather reports” on their Facebook page to track the weekly weather forecast and suggest the best times to visit the museum when foot traffic will be the lightest. The drier the weather, the quieter the museum will be.

Special Events

A Night in the Emerald City Gala, September 28 at the Dewberry

7:00p.m. – 10:00p.m.

Join CML for an evening of over-the-rainbow delights, food and drink, an exciting silent and live auction, live entertainment and more at A Night in the Emerald City Gala. All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and will support the museum’s mission to engage young children’s potential by inviting families of all backgrounds to explore environments and experiences that spark imagination and stimulate curiosity through the power of PLAY. Fam Jam, November 2 at Marion Square

10:00a.m. – 2:00p.m.

CML’s biggest event of the year, Fam Jam celebrates the power of play and shows children and their grown-ups that being active can be fun. This free event in Marion Square is an action-packed day of fun. CML will collaborate with more than 30 community partners who will participate in the event, providing playful activities to engage children of all ages. Ongoing Programs

Full STEAM Ahead – Tuesdays at 3:30p.m., Sundays at 1:30p.m.

Ages: 4-10

Children are invited to explore STEAM concepts through art at CML! This program allows children to use both their creativity and analytical skills to tackle projects. From painting with robots to building bugs that dance, to creating art through chemical reactions, this program provides engaging enrichment activities. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Small Scientists Society – Tuesdays, 11:00a.m. (12 weeks: September 10 – December 10; no class on October 22 or November 26)

Ages: 3-5

Small Scientists Society gives children ages 3-5 the opportunity to explore scientific concepts through developmentally appropriate practices over the course of 12 weeks. During each weekly session, children are introduced to a specific STEM concepts via children’s books, reviewing safety procedures and hands-on activities. Families participating in the program will receive extension activities to further exploration at home.

Price: $60 Member / $70 Non-Member for all 12 weeks. Walk-in Price: $6 Member / $7 Non-Member

Art Room Surprise – Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10:30a.m. – 12:00p.m.

Ages: 2-10

Visit the art room every Tuesday and Saturday where children will be introduced to the week’s “Discovery Den” materials. Children will explore new media and artistic processes such as oil pastels, collage, weaving, sand art and more.  This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Let’s Move – Tuesdays & Saturdays, 2:00p.m. – 3:00p.m.

Ages: 2-10

For a healthy lifestyle, it is recommended children do an hour or more of physical activity each day. Drop by CML between 2—3 p.m. each Tuesday and Saturday to get active with one of the museum’s play specialists with activities like balloon badminton, scarf dancing, animal yoga and more! Plus, instructors will talk about healthy eating habits to get little ones excited about fruits and veggies. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Early Connections – Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:00a.m.

Ages: Birth-3

CML’s youngest visitors and their grown-ups are invited to join the museum for special programming each week designed to strengthen connections between the child and grown-up by developing rituals, modeling attunement and promoting self-regulation skills. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Brown Bag STEM Challenge – Wednesdays and Sundays, 3:30p.m.

Ages: 4-10

Families are invited to tackle a STEM challenge each week. Pick up a brown bag containing the materials your family needs to complete the challenge at the front desk any time on Wednesdays and Sundays. Work as a team to design and build your project and then test your design against others. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

PLAY to Learn – Thursdays, 10:00a.m. and Fridays, 11:00a.m.

Ages: 2-5

During PLAY to Learn programs, trained CML staff lead children in story time and an activity that focuses on kindergarten readiness skills, such as letter and number recognition, counting, shapes and colors, fine and gross motor skills, reading readiness and social skills. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Mini Masterpieces – Thursdays, 3:30p.m.

Ages: 4-10

Mini Masterpieces introduces children to artists, their work and their methods to inspire the next generation of artists and creative thinkers. Children create their own works of art using the learned techniques. This program is free with CML Membership or admission.

Holiday Camps

Turkey Time Camp – November 25-27

At the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry’s Turkey Time Camp, children ages 3-10 celebrate fall and Thanksgiving through STEAM activities! Some of the activities include engineering turkey traps, erupting an “Apple-Cano,” and designing candy pumpkin towers. Young chefs will also create their own festive aprons to help cook Thanksgiving dinner in style! Campers will also have time to play in the museum exhibits. To register, visit http://bit.ly/2A2EIKq.

Winter Wonderland Camp – December 26-27 and December 30-January 3

Children ages 3-10 are invited to play with hands-on experiences that promote the arts and sciences at CML’s Winter Wonderland Camp. Children will design and build igloos, teeny tiny toboggans and confetti cannons. Every day has different activities so your child can learn through play all winter break long. On December 31, CML will host a Noon Year’s Eve party in the camp room with a ball drop, party hats and noisemakers. Campers will also have time to play in the museum exhibits.
