It’s Banned Books Week at Park Circle’s Itinerant Literate Books

Banned Books Week begins today at Itinerant Literate Books in Park Circle. Banned Books Week is an annual event that draws attention to the harms of censorship and honors the freedom to read.

The business will hold several events throughout the week:

  • Author Postcard Writing Party
    • Sunday, Sept. 22, 2 pm to 4 pm
    • Stop in to write a postcard to the author of your favorite banned book (postcards will be provided)
  • Banned Books Week Trivia
    • Monday, Sept. 23, 6 pm to 8 pm
    • We’ll run a traditional bar-style trivia based on banned books trivia. You can BYO beverage (and food!) for this event.

  • Censorship Talk with Paul Bowers
    • Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
    • Local reporter Paul Bowers will discuss the potential and practical harms of censorship with a talk titled “Dangerous Books for Dangerous Times: Reading Banned Literature in the Trump Era”
  • Beasts & Belles Tour
    • Thursday, Sept. 26, 7 pm to 8:30 pm
    • Corrie Wang, author of The Takedown and City of Beasts, and Dhonielle Clayton, COO of We Need Diverse Books and author of The Belles series, will discuss why so many great YA books are being censored and banned

  • Speak Easy Open Mic
    • Friday, Sept. 27, 7 to 9 pm
    • Sign up to share poetry, short stories, comedy, or music based on censorship or banned books
  • WORD PIRATES Story Time
    • Saturday, Sept. 28, 3 pm to 4 pm
    • A ravenous band of pirates who eat words for breakfast gobble up the world’s greatest stories. But never fear—the Word Wizard and the children she reads to are on the case!
  • Banned Books Week Finale Party
    • Saturday, Sept. 28, 5 pm to 7 pm
    • Join us to celebrate the end of this activity-filled week and review ways we as a community can support free speech. Come dressed as your favorite banned book character to partake in the costume contest!
