First Local Class For Wine & Spirit Education Trust; European Certification Comes to Charleston

For the first time, Charleston and coastal wine lovers can study locally for certification by The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). The certification course that is considered the gold standard in Europe is now operating in the Holy City under the direction of WSET certified educator, Thomas George.
The first class will be held on Saturday, October 19th from 9 am to 5 pm at the Charleston Wine + Food office at 635 Rutledge Avenue.
WSET provides best-in-class education and qualifications to inspire and empower the world’s wine and spirits professionals and enthusiasts. They offer a comprehensive suite of qualifications covering wines, spirits and sake.
Thomas George will be conducting the classes and holds the WSET Level 4 Diploma certification, the highest qualification offered by the WSET.
“WSET is the standard in Europe and Asia and has been operating in the U.S. for many years,” George said. “I’m happy to be bringing the WSET to the Lowcountry, and look forward to sharing the knowledge this 50 year-old company has amassed about wine and spirits.”
WSET qualifications are globally recognized as the international standard in wine and spirit knowledge. They are designed for those who are just starting out in their careers, as well as established professionals, and the many enthusiasts who have a passion for wines and spirits.
What students learn during a Level 1 course:
- The main types and styles of wine
- Common wine grapes and their characteristics
- How to store and serve wine
- The principles of food and wine pairing
- How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
