City Partners with Lowcountry Voices to Host Unity Concert

The Mayor’s Clergy Advisory Council, Charleston Illumination Project, and Charleston Police Fund will host “Illuminate Charleston: Many Colors Paint the Rainbow,” a concert featuring Lowcountry Voices, a local choral group, at 5 pm on Sunday, November 3rd at Second Presbyterian Church, located at 342 Meeting Street.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and Police Chief Luther Reynolds will speak at the concert, emphasizing the need for unity and conciliation among all our citizens. The event is free and open to the public.

Nathan L. Nelson, Founder and Director of Lowcountry Voices, originated the concert idea along with Rev. Dr. Kylon Middleton of the Charleston Illumination Project.

“We hope this concert brings diverse groups of people together and inspires truthful healing and respectful interaction,” Rev. Dr. Middleton said.

The 90-minute concert will open with a performance of the title song “Many Colors Paint the Rainbow” by composer Roy Houpp and will be followed by contemporary and sacred music, including “Walk Together Children” and “I Am His Child” by composer Moses Hogan, as well as “The Storm Is Passing Over” by composer Barbara Baker and “Heal Our Land/Be Blessed” by composers Oscar Williams and Kurt Carr.

“Like most great and historic cities, Charleston has known triumph and tragedy in equal measure,” Mayor Tecklenburg said. “And yet, today, we stand united, as citizens of every background and every walk of life work together in large ways and small to secure the future we all want for ourselves and our children.”
