PURE Theatre Announces South Carolina Premiere of “Tiny Beautiful Things”

Based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012. When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small. The New York Times wrote “ Tiny Beautiful Things is about the endangered art of listening to – and really hearing and responding to – other people…it works beautifully as a sustained theatrical exercise in empathy.” 

PURE Theatre’s production will be directed by Sharon Graci and is taking over the previously announced Welcome to Keene, NH slot in Season 17. Tiny Beautiful Things will feature Core Ensemble members Sullivan Hamilton, Cristy Landis, and Douglas Scott Streater as well as Evan Parry. Estimated run time is 90 minutes with no intermission and will run from January 9 – February 1, 2020. Strayed is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Wild and the New York Times bestsellers Tiny Beautiful Things and Brave Enough . Wild was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as her first selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 and went on to be an Oscar-nominated movie adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. Vardalos wrote and starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In addition to adapting the book for the stage, Vardalos originated the role of Sugar in The Public Theater’s world premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things directed by Thomas Kail.

Tickets for Tiny Beautiful Things are on sale now at puretheatre.org and at the PURE Theatre box office. Tickets range from $10-$35. Advance purchases are strongly recommended. In an effort to make attendance as accessible as possible, PURE will offer a number of opportunities for accessible ticket rates throughout the run, including two Pay-What-You-Will performances on Thursday, January 9 and Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 pm and regular $10 student ticket rates.
