CCPL and the Lowcountry Food Bank Bring Afterschool Snacks to the Library
The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and the Lowcountry Food Bank (LFB) are working together to alleviate child hunger in Charleston by providing after school snacks at three library branches. The free, nutritious snacks are available to kids and teens from 3 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
“The reality is that every day we see kids and teens in our branches that may be there for several hours after school, and in some cases may not get another substantial meal until they return to school the next day,” CCPL Community Engagement Manager Devon Andrews said. “We are thrilled to partner with the Food Bank to provide nourishment to these kids in a wonderful community space such as our libraries.”
The program is currently being offered at three branches – Otranto Road Regional Library (2261 Otranto Rd.), Hurd/St. Andrews Library (1735 N Woodmere Dr.), and Main Library (68 Calhoun St.). – though the goal is to ultimately expand to other libraries in the system. Snacks are being provided through the LFB’s Kids Café program, and feature nutritious options such as fruit, cheese, yogurt and muffins.
“Kids Café aims to help alleviate child hunger through the provision of nutritious meals served in after-school settings to children at-risk of food insecurity,” LFB Child Hunger Programs manager Kara Moore said. “We are proud to continue to work with the library to further our mission to end childhood hunger in coastal South Carolina.
