Help Support Charleston Restaurants Through Charleston Tip Jar

Press Release

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, the food and beverage industry remains one of the hardest hit. With Charleston restaurants closed or limited to delivery and take-out service, local businessmen and longtime members of the Charleston restaurant community, Steve Carroll and Mike Werner, felt the need to do something to help these establishments stay afloat during the shutdown. Utilizing their proprietary event ticketing platform, Wholly Ticket, they created Charleston Tip Jar.

Charleston Tip Jar is a platform where customers can purchase e-gift cards to any restaurant or bar in the Charleston area to help generate some revenue during the closure. The funds from the e-gift cards will be transferred to the restaurants now to help business owners pay their bills while they’re dealing with an unprecedented loss of business. Customers who purchase e-gift cards will receive a voucher for the full face value of the gift certificate to be redeemed once the restaurant reopens.

When asked why they developed Charleston Tip Jar, Werner said, “We just couldn’t sit on our hands. These are our customers and our friends and they’re suffering. We kept trying to think of a way we could help and finally it dawned on us that the Wholly Ticket system could be used to sell gift cards.”

Customers can go to CharlestonTipJar.com to purchase the e-gift cards. They will enter their name and email address as well as the establishment to which they wish to purchase the gift card and the amount. They will then be directed to a secure payment portal for credit card processing. Once the transaction is complete the customer will receive an email voucher for the full face value of the gift card to be redeemed at the restaurant at a later date. The restaurants receive the funds and a list of all customers who purchase gift cards with amounts.

Carroll commented, “I’ve owned restaurants all my life and was president of the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association for several years. It’s absolutely unthinkable what’s happening right now and as a community who relies heavily on the hospitality industry, I know that Charlestonians are looking for ways to help. We hope this makes a dent in the mounting losses these local businesses are experiencing.”

Wholly Ticket, an event ticketing company, and Wholly Event, an event promotion company, are owned and operated by Steve Carroll and Mike Werner. They have worked with events throughout the Lowcountry and beyond including The Taste of Charleston, The Lowcountry Oyster Festival, Taste of Folly, Sea & Sand Festival, and Folly Palooza as well as a multitude of non-profits including The Ronald McDonald House, Pet Helpers, Hollings Cancer Center, My Sister’s House, Shriner’s International, and more.
