Public Invited to Engage in Harleyville’s Virtual Comprehensive Planning Effort

Press Release

The Town of Harleyville, with assistance from the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), invites the public to respond to a community survey and watch a video presenting preliminary information about the town and its ongoing comprehensive plan update.

The survey, video presentation and other resources related to the Harleyville comprehensive plan, can be found at www.bcdcog.com/hcp2020. After watching the video, residents and stakeholders are asked to provide comments, questions, ideas and other feedback. The deadline to respond to the survey is June 30.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the video presentation and survey are being offered by the Town as a virtual public workshop, replacing the posters and hard-copy materials typically found at Town Hall meetings. The workshop’s purpose is to provide an overview of the comprehensive planning process, timelines, and to review the Town’s existing conditions with residents and stakeholders.

“The comprehensive plan will provide a framework for elected and appointed Town officials and staff to reference in developing policies and informing decisions that will best embody the community’s shared vision,” said BCDCOG Planning Director Kathryn Basha. “This long-range, strategic planning document should be representative of all community members, therefore public participation is integral to its success.”

Responses to the community survey will be used to help the Town and BCDCOG identify various strengths and potential areas for improvement. Participants will also have the opportunity to identify any opportunities or difficulties they foresee, as well as how they envision the town in the future.

Harleyville’s 2020 comprehensive planning process is expected to be completed by the end of the year. A draft plan will be presented to the town and planning commission for review and feedback. A public hearing will then be held with the document finalized and adopted by Town Council in winter 2020.
